BASEBALL
THURSDAY May 18th

Union Academy 5, Cherryville 1
This has been a rough week for Cherryville. By now surely everybody knows about the storm that hit the town Tuesday afernoon (May 16th). In addition to the damage and the power outages, it forced the postponement of the NCHSAA 1A baseball playoff game between Cherryville High School and Union Academy. That game was played Thursday afternoon and resulted in the first loss for CHS since
early April.

Things went well for five innings. Junior Eli Newsome, who had 70 strikeouts to his credit in 12 games this season held the Cardinals to just two hits through those five innings while striking out eight. The opponents got those two hits in the second inning, one of them a double, and threatened--but didn't score.

The Ironmen had taken a 1-0 lead in the first inning and held it until the top of the sixth. Then Union Academy used five hits, one of them a double, and took advantage of a wild pitch to score three runs. Newsome finally needed help from Collin Huss to get the third out.

Cherryville went three up and three down in the bottom of the sixth; the the Cardinals' first four batters in the top of the 7th all had a hit and they had a 5-1 lead when the Ironmen batted in the 7th. Cherryville failed to score again and the season ended with the loss that gave them a 23-5 record for the year.

GIRLS SOCCER
THURSDAY MAY 18th

East Lincoln 3, Atkins 1 (2 OT)
They had to go to the second overtime before the East Lincoln girls soccer team beat previously undefeated Winston=Salem Atkins on Thursday. The win means the Mustangs will play at #2 seed West Henderson on Monday (May 22nd).

In a defensive battle, the game remained scoreless until just under 12 minutes to go in second half; then Ginny Overbay scored to give East a 1-0 advantage; but Atkins tied the game  three minutes later. Neither team scored in the first overtime but Grace Harpster and Morgan Brotherton scored in the second to give East its 19th win of the season.  The Western Foothills Conference has three teams still alive in the playoffs.  Hickory, which just edged out the 12-1-1 Mustangs for the top spot in the league with a 13-1 conference record, beat Central Cabarrus 3-0 Thursday.  St. Stephens, who finished just behind East in the conference at 10-3-1, beat North Davidson 3-1, so the Indians will play the Red Tornadoes in Hickory on Monday.

Wilkes Central 4, Lincoln Charter 2
While East Lincoln advanced in the 3A playoffs, Lincoln Charter lost in their 2A playoff game at Wilkes Central.  Miranda Beauford had both the Eagles' goals, one in the first half and the other in the second, on assists by Carly Yates and Olivia Lesniak.

SOFTBALL
East Lincoln goes after their 21st win of the season when they play at Enka on Friday.
