North Carolina's economy is slowly but surely beginning to recover. The unemployment rate in Lincoln, Catawba, Gaston and Cleveland counties fell to single digits in June. For Lincoln County, it was the third straight decrease in the unemployment rate, which hit 12.7% in April.
Lincoln County's June rate was 6.8%, a decrease of 5.6 percentage points from May. Catawba County unemployment was 8.6%. Gaston County; 8.5%; and Cleveland County, 7.8%.
Before the pandemic, Lincoln County had usually been in the top 10 counties in the state with the lowest unemployment rates. The June report puts Lincoln in 30th place.
A dozen North Carolina counties had a June rate of less than 6% while only four of the 100 still had double-digit unemployment rates, compared with 80 in May. The June not seasonally adjusted statewide rate was 7.9 percent.
