North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper was joined by other state officials including Sec. of Public Instruction Mark Johnson, NCDHHS Secretary Mandy Cohen, and Director of Emergency Management Mike Sprayberry as he update his executive order, closing schools now through May 15th.
The Governor also said gyms, hair salons, barber shops and nail salons must close by 5 PM Wednesday.
He stopped short of a 'shelter in place' edict similar to what has been instituted in 11 states because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Vice chairman of the state Board of Education Alan Duncan said changes will be made to make sure that schools are able to provide remote learning for students during the time that schools are closed.
Cooper said he hasn't given up on the possibility of continuing the school year, but he said the challenge now is making sure that not only are students' needs met but also that teachers and other education personnel get paid.
The Lincoln County Board of Education is scheduled to hold another special meeting Friday morning (March 27th) at 8 AM. The Catawba County School Board will hold its regular monthly meeting at 5:30 Monday afternoon (March 23rd).
