Jimmie "Jim" Parlier Sherrill
November 14, 1934 - September 14, 2020

NEWTON, N.C. - Jimmie "Jim" Parlier Sherrill, 85, of Newton passed away on Monday, September 14, 2020 at Carolina Caring in Sherrills Ford.

He was born November 14, 1934 in Catawba County to the late S.D. Sherrill Sr. and Rosa Lee Parlier. Jim was a Lifelong Member of Friendship United Methodist Church in Newton and retired from Allstate Insurance after 37 years of Service.

Jim was a Steadfast Christian, whose faith was an example to everyone, who met him. During his service to his church, he was elected Lay Person of the Year in 2004. Jim was an active member of the United Methodist Men, he would often host Prayer Breakfasts at the Campground and in the home, build ramps for Handicap individuals, cooked for various church breakfasts, worked various church fundraisers, and sang in the choir. He was also a Trustee for the church cemetery. If there was another in need, Jim was always there to lend a helping hand. Jim was the proud owner of Tent 23 at the Balls Creek Campground. Every year come rain or shine; you were bound to see Jim. He could be seen listening to preaching from the front porch of the tent or in the Arbor, walking around visiting, or entertaining in the Tent.

To his family Jim was the therapist, gardener, business consultant, chauffeur, coach, handy man, teacher, wheeler and dealer, and mechanic. Jim could be found on his tractor plowing for the annual garden, cutting the lawn, mulching leaves, riding the grandkids around, or putting up gourds for the annual Martins, that his wife Shirley loved so much. Jim adored the beach and spent many days enjoying the sand and surf with his grandkids. Jim had a knack for finding vehicles and just about anything on the Swap Shop. Jim was a diehard UNC Tarheel fan, in March he could be found in front of the TV watching the ACC and NCAA Tournaments.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers and sister, S.D. “Jake” Sherrill Jr., Don Sherrill, Bill Sherrill, and his Infant Sister Sherrill, sister-in-law Kay Sherrill, and son-in-law Tony Gadfield.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 66 years Shirley Shook Sherill of the home; sons Dustie Sherrill of Newton, Terry Sherrill and wife Ida of Maiden; daughter Trudy Gadfield of Newton; sisters-in-law Thelma Sherrill of Newton, Shelba Sherrill of Conover; grandchildren Tara Locklin Vaughan of Newton, Bryan Sherrill and wife Ashley Linebarger of Catawba, Lena Gadfield of Hickory; great-grandchildren Jameson Vaughan, McKenzie Sherrill, Miles Sherrill, Wayne Reed, Harmony Wallace.

A celebration of the life of Jim will be held on Sunday, September 20, 2020 at 2 p.m. at the Balls Creek Campground in Catawba. Rev. Derek Cline and Lori Anne Bowen will officiate. A private burial will follow at Friendship United Methodist Church in Newton. Family will be available following the service.
