David Yates "Gunk" Mauney
January 11, 1961 - August 9, 2020

CHERRYVILLE, N.C. - Mr. David Yates "Gunk" Mauney, 59, passed away on Sunday, August 9, 2020 at Wendover Hospice House in Shelby.

David was born on January 11, 1961 in Cleveland County, a son of the late Yates Franklin Mauney Sr. and Hilda Black Mauney. He was a 1979 graduate of Cherryville High School and was an electrician for 37 years. David was a wonderful friend to all. He loved football and was an avid Washington Redskins fan.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Yates "Buck" Mauney Jr. and a nephew Tripp Mauney.

Survivors include his wife of 22 years, Barbara Neill Mauney of the home; two sons, David Hunter Mauney and Ben David Mauney; and a daughter Jaclyn Elizabeth Mauney all of Cherryville.

The family greeted friends on Thursday, August 13, 2020 from 10:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Cherryville. Due to COVID-19 restrictions social distancing and face coverings were required.

A memorial service was held at 12 p.m. on Thursday, August 13, 2020 with Pastor Vince Hefner officiating.

Burial was in the City Memorial Cemetery in Cherryville.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, NC 28150.
