MLK Unity Awards Announced
The Gaston Clergy and Citizens Coalition, an arm of Gaston Together, is proud to announce the 2021 winners of the annual Martin Luther King Unity Awards. This year’s honorees are Gastonia Police Chief Travis Brittain, Rev. Rodney Freeman and Shaaron Funderburk.

Hickory Area: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Youth Oratorical Contest
Due to COVID-19 the Hickory National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is making changes to its traditional Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day activities by including a Youth Oratorical Contest to be held Saturday, January 9. Deadline to enter is 5 p.m. on January 5.

The featured speaker will be retired United States Army general Abraham Turner. A South Carolina native, Turner is a highly decorated veteran of some 35 years of service. Local military veterans are encouraged to attend. No reservations are required. But if possible, veterans are encouraged to RSVP.
