During the COVID-19 pandemic, many are stepping up to help their neighbors. School systems in Lincoln, Gaston, Catawba & Cleveland counties have all organized programs to make sure that students who depend on the school lunch program don't go hungry while the schools are closed. Kathy Vinzant with the United Way of Lincoln County has been working to coordinate the efforts of various groups, churches, companies and individuals. Ross Bulla of the Treadstone Group is putting together another effort at helping this week.
Ross has organized a food drive at his office (2173 Smith Harbour Drive, entrance to Smithstone right across NC16-business from Speedway). He's accepting donations of food and basic necessities, pet food and supplies, coloring books or items to keep children occupied, etc., each day through Thursday (March 26th).
Plans are for volunteers to arrive at noon Thursday to begin putting together bags of items. The distribution to those who need them will be a drive-thru event starting at 3 PM. If you want to volunteer, arrive by noon Thursday. Social distancing will be maintained and gloves will be provided for volunteers. The distribution will be a drive-thru pick up by recipients.
This is an EXTRA effort. Parents of children in school are encouraged to use the resources in place through the eight school sites coordinated by the school system:
- Battleground Elementary
- S. Ray Lowder Elementary
- West Lincoln Middle School
- North Brook Elementary
- Norris Childers Elementary
- Iron Station Elementary
- East Lincoln High School
- Pumpkin Center Intermediate School
These sites will be open from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM each school day and will provide lunch (fruit, vegetable, sandwich, and milk) and a breakfast (fruit, milk, cereal/breakfast entrée) for the next day; to be picked up at a drive-thru--look for the signage to direct cars to the appropriate locations on each campus.
Other efforts are also underway. Pursuit Church is focusing on the elderly.
For others, including families with pets in need, the Thursday event may be helpful. To volunteer or arrange to drop off items, contact Ross at RossBulla@gmail.com.
