Gaston College Releases Safety Plan For New Semester
Compliance with State-mandated restrictions

Gaston College has released its safety plan for the upcoming new semester, which begins Aug. 20.

Called the Gaston College Safe Plan, it includes input from the college community, recommendations from local, state and federal agencies, including the North Carolina Community College System, the Gaston and Lincoln county health departments, the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control (or CDC), according to Gaston College spokeswoman Stephanie Michael-Pickett.

Gaston College President Dr. John Hauser commented earlier this week.

“We are committed to the safety, health and well-being of our students, faculty and staff,” said Hauser. “As the COVID-19 (corona virus disease, 2019) pandemic continues, our safety plan provides a strategic blueprint we can follow to be prepared to respond to current risks and changes associated with the potential spread of COVID.

“In a collective effort by administration, faculty and staff,” he added, “we will continue to provide a caring, supportive and safe environment that encourages our students to keep learning and to move forward with their academic goals. It’s also important for their families to know we are doing everything we can to promote health and safety, which will protect them too. We must support each other and keep a positive attitude as we strive for success.”

Multiple types of instruction will be used for the upcoming semester. This includes those that are Internet-based, in-person and hybrid––this last being a combination of Internet-based and in-person classes. The plan outlines specific safety measures for in-person classes and labs, including new seating layouts to promote greater physical space between students. Enhanced cleaning and disinfecting measures are also in place. Temperature checks of people’s ears may also be made a part of entering Gaston College campuses or buildings.

Registration for the new semester is open for returning and new students. Students may register until 6 p.m., Aug. 18.
