Foard Headed To State Finals

Wayne Howard
Staff Writer

After a one-day postponement because of Thursday's severe weather, the Fred T. Foard Tigers hosted the third and fourth rounds of the 2A western region wrestling championships. They proceeded to advance their season team record to 46-0 with a 38-26 win over Central Academy and an easier 51-19 win over Pisgah.

Foard returns to the dual finals at the Greensboro Coliseum Fieldhouse Saturday (Feb. 8th) for the first time since 2015. The Tigers will face 2A East Region champion Croatan at the in a contest scheduled to begin at 3 PM. The Tigers are looking for their third dual championship--they won 3A titles in 2013 and 2015.

They lost their first meet of the year in the 2A western dual final in 2018 to West Lincoln, who went on to win the state championship. This year, just like in 2018, the Tigers were unbeaten in dual competition when they met West earlier this week. They won that match 46-43 to eliminate the Rebels and advance to Thursday's matches.

Admission for the Saturday championship matches in Greensboro is $8 at the gate. If you are unable to attend but would like to see the competition, all State Championship matches will stream live via the NFHS Network ($10.99 per month).
