CHERRYVILLE, N.C. - I remember the first day I stepped on the Donna J. Lavery Courts at Cherryville High School. It was a whole new ball game to me. I was attempting to try something new. It involved me having to have a racquet and ball in hand. During this time, I was not the most graceful person ever. Therefore, until this day I am not much better.

The concept of tennis was a tough thing for me to get a grasp on. However, two years later, I am able to hit the ball over the net better than I ever could before and my love for the game of tennis has become endless.

As senior night approached us, I was nervous but mostly sad. This was the last time I would ever play a match for CHS besides conference. Over the years, I have grown bonds with my coaches, but most importantly my teammates.

Playing on these courts for the last time made me realize how lucky I was to have gotten to know the girls on a more personal level. Even though graduation is still eight or so months away, it still seems so close. Part of me is ready for what's to come. The other part of me still wants to hang onto moments like this for a while.

I would not have made it this far without the support from my family, coaches, teammates, and friends. I could not be more thankful for the time I have gotten to spend on these courts. Consequently so, the best advice I can give to those younger than me is to try something new and take it with a grain of salt.

Who knows, you might find a love that derives in you for it. Although, I may or may pursue tennis in college, I will always be a teammate and player for Cherryville High.

Cherryville High’s Varsity Tennis conference is this Tuesday, October 8. The top seven girls are: Katie Diaz, Kelly Diaz, Katie Branch, Savannah Wise, Juliana Vollmer, Libbi Smith, and Gracie Rickard.

The Cherryville High school’s Varsity Tennis coach is Brandon Shull, along with his assistant coach Itzel Diaz.

We played Lincoln Charter who is very high in our conference. It was a tough loss 0-9.

MEET OUR INTERN --- Hello, my name is Gracie Rickard and I will be writing about the sports and other events that happen at Cherryville High School. I am a senior this year and I am very active in our school’s student section, the Metalheads. I attempt to go to almost every game and I am excited to share the sports of Cherryville that normally do not get recognize and also some that do. I currently play varsity tennis, and track and field for Cherryville. I have been playing tennis since my junior year and track and field since my sophomore year. I also am involved in many of the clubs at Cherryville High School such as Journalism Club, Interact Club, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. After high school, I plan to pursue a pathway to become a dental hygienist or something in the medical field. I love to help others and be involved in my community. Therefore, I think by pursuing a degree in the medical field I will be able to continue to do these things. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for the events at Cherryville and GO IRONMEN!
