West Caldwell posted a run in the bottom of the first inning and briefly held the lead, but the West Lincoln Rebels scored five in the top of the second and added six more, three each in the 4th & 5th, as West improved to 8-4 in the Catawba Valley Conference (8-10 overall).
Maiden fell to Bunker Hill 11-0; and Bandys, the CVAC leader, was beaten by East Lincoln in a non-conference game. The Trojans opened with a four-run first inning, but East matched that in its first at-bat. Bandys scored two more in the top of the 2nd. East scored one in the bottom; then added four runs in the third, one in the fourth and 3 in the 5th. Bandys got two more in the 6th, but the East Lincoln lead was too much to overcome. The final was Mustangs 13, Trojans 8.
Garrett Michel hit two home runs; Isaac Armstrong hit one. Gavin Houser batted 2 for 4 and scored three runs. Evan Matile had a double and batted in three runs. Michel also had three RBIs. Kaden Scott got the win on the mound.
The win gives East a record of 12-3.
Most area teams will be involved in tournament play next week during Spring Break.
Lincoln Charter was on Spring Break this week and lost a pair of games in York, SC. After beating Rock Hill 12-8 on Tuesday, the Eagles fell to York 5-4 in 9 innings Wednesday, then lost to Northwestern 12-4 on Thursday.
The East Lincoln and Fred T. Foard girls soccer teams fought to a scoreless tie Thursday. The match went two overtimes, but while the Tigers couldn't give the Mustangs their first Western Foothills Conference loss, they did manage to add a tie to their record. East is now 6-0-1 in the league and still on top; 9-2-1 overall.
North Lincoln scored two first half goals, but gave up four in the second, losing 4-2 at St. Stephens.
In Catawba Valley Conference play, Bandys beat West Lincoln 2-0; Maiden downed East Burke 4-1. Lincolnton didn't play Thursday. The Wolves, who lead the league with a 5-1 record, beat West Lincoln on Tuesday 5-1.
West Lincoln won 10-5 at West Caldwell Thursday to improve to 13-4 overall. The Rebels' win gives them an 11-1 CVAC record, tied with Bandys for the league lead. Bandys got credit for a win Thursday on a forfeiture by Newton-Conover. Lincolnton didn't play Thursday. The Wolves lost to East Burke 9-1 Wednesday. We did not receive any report on the Maiden vs Bunker Hill game.
North Lincoln and East Lincoln didn't play Thursday. The Knights won at St. Stephens 5-1 Wednesday, while East improved to 16-0 with a 6-0 win over Foard.
