Schools Weather Update

Wayne Howard

The snow, sleet & ice from last weekend continues to have its residual effect on our area. Roads are now almost fully cleared, but Wednesday afternoon, there were still a few spots on rural roads that had some snow/sleet accumulation still showing. Be very careful as you venture out Thursday morning.

Lincoln County Schools will have another virtual learning day Thursday with an optional teacher workday (full announcement below).

Lincoln Charter School will operate on a two hour delay.

Catawba County Schools will have a remote learning day for students and staff Thursday; no Quest.

CVCC classes will operate on a regular schedule including Catawba County Schools Challenger students.

Cleveland County Schools will remain closed for students with an optional teacher workday.

Gaston College will be open and return to normal operations on Thursday.

Gaston County Schools have not (as they had other days) posted a news release about Thursday plans as of 6:30 PM Wednesday. The GCS website also has no information. Anybody have anything directly from the schools? (I must have a valid schools source, not just Facebook commentary.)

Lincoln County Schools will operate on an optional staff workday on a 1 hr delay for Thursday Jan 20, 2022. Students will operate on a remote learning day as well. Both of these decisions are made based on secondary road conditions. In a communication with NCDOT officials, about 30% of the secondary roads in Lincoln County are in rough shape. Even with the warmer weather today and the temperatures staying above freezing tonight, several roads are still more ice than black asphalt. This will make it tricky for some drivers and will present an unknown risk to our bus drivers. All staff have the option to work remotely from home or come into their buildings on a 1 hr delay only if the employee can travel to work safely. Should any employee choose to not work remotely or in person, then the appropriate leave will be utilized. These employees should check with their supervisor for further details. All staff will be tasked with preparing for the return of students or they should be working on communicating with their students via the learning management system to assist with questions regarding their remote assignments. Students should log into Canvas or Google Classroom to view their assignments for Thursday. As a reminder, all work assigned on a remote learning day is due to the teacher within 5 days of a return to face to face learning.
