Snow/Sleet/Rain Continue

Wayne Howard
Reporter

In western Lincoln County, the snow and sleet have accumulated 6 - 8 inches deep in most areas.  It's mostly sleet which has been falling since mid-morning.  In Lincolnton, the snow/sleet mixture is about 4 inches, although some said more.  Northwestern Lincoln County and Hickory had more snow but it was sleeting by 1 PM.  Depths range from 8 inches to a foot.

Sheriff Bill Beam told us at 1 PM that Lincoln County hadn't reported any major accident, although there had been some minor ones.  Duke Energy had over 200 customers without electricity in Cleveland County north of Shelby; other outages involved more individual homes.  REMC had about a dozen customers in Cleveland County without power.

All precipitation should end by early evening.  Temps will not warm to above freezing until mid-morning on Monday.  MLK Day events were tapered back this year because of COVID.  A march from Cedar St. to the Courtsquare in Lincolnton is planned for 1:30.  A short program will follow on the south side of the courthouse.  It will be sunny Monday and by late morning, ice on roads should all be melted away so events will happen as planned.

If you have to go to work early Monday, watch out for 'black ice' early in the morning.
