Weather/Cancellations Update

Lincoln Herald Staff
lh@lincolnherald.net

At 4 AM, it was snowing in Lincolnton, Hickory, Shelby and Gastonia. It appears now that much of the day's weather will be mixed precipitation, and the accumulations won't be nearly as much as predicted. The warmer temps in the upper atmosphere will cause the snow to become mixed with sleet by 9 AM and freezing rain will make driving conditions worse than snow would have. The surface temp is now below freezing in our area and will continue to drop. The low (24°) will be about 8 AM, but it won't warm to above freezing until mid-morning on Monday. MLK Day will be sunny and the high will make it to the upper 30s in the afternoon. We may see a return to snow late afternoon, but it won't last that long. By nightfall Sunday, it should end. Total accumulation will likely be only 4-6 inches in Hickory but some locations could get an inch or two more, 2-4 in Lincolnton, and 1-2 inches in Gastonia and Shelby--but the icing will possibly cause power outages and travel may be hazardous because of icy spots.

By 7:30 AM, there were already widespread power outages in Gaston County.  About four thousand homes were without electricity. Over a thousand of those were in an area northeast of Mt. Holly along NC273.  REMC was not reporting any multiple home outages.

We have the following church cancellation announcements at this time. Churches, businesses, and others with weather-related schedule changes are welcome to post them as a comment to this article on our Facebook page or send us the info to lh@lincolnherald.com.
