New Courthouse Almost Ready

Wayne Howard
Reporter

The new Lincoln County Courthouse is nearing completion.  Located near the Health Dept. and the YMCA, the new courthouse will be completed in March according to County Manager Kelly Atkins' report to County Commissioners last week.

The move of the court-related offices is just one of the moves that will be made soon by the County.

The Register of Deeds office will be moving to the building adjacent to the Lincoln County Health Dept. in March. The Veterans Service office and the Lincoln County Recreation Dept. office currently located there will be moving to the northeast corner of E. Pine & N. Academy streets in early January.

On Saturday (Dec. 18th) Lincoln Masonic Lodge #137 hosted a ceremony at the new facility placing a cornerstone plaque. Tommy Smith, Lodge #137 Secretary, had received approval for the placement at a County Commissioners' meeting in October. The plaque is the third placed on a Lincoln County courthouse. The first was placed on the 1853 courthouse. When the current courthouse was completed in 1921, a plaque was placed there.

The Saturday dedication was an important historical observance, but the ceremony opening the new courthouse will be much larger. In his report to Commissioners, Atkins said a Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting has been tentatively scheduled for April 8th.

Commissioners and the Lincolnton City Council have entered into an agreement with the UNC School of Government to explore the possibility of a public-private development of the current courthouse. Information on those plans is available on the County website at http://www.lincolncounty.org/2413/Future-Plans-for-Historic-Courthouse.
