LINCOLNTON, N.C. – Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputies investigating a rash of vehicle break-ins on December 2, 2021 arrested one of five people who fled the scene and crashed their getaway car.
Deputies were dispatched to the Verdict Ridge subdivision around 2 a.m. after neighbor’s confronted occupants of an SUV going around the neighborhood checking vehicles to see if they were unlocked. The vehicle, occupied by five people, fled the scene.
A deputy located the vehicle on Highway 73 near the Highway 16 intersection and chased the SUV as it fled west on Highway 73. After making several turns onto secondary roads the vehicle crashed into the wood line at Amity Church Road and Christopher Road. The five occupants jumped from the vehicle and ran from the scene. Deputies searched the area and located the driver, a 16 year old juvenile suspect, hiding in a house under construction. Charlie and Baker District deputies along with a K-9 unit from Catawba County saturated the area but were unable to locate the other individuals.
Charlie District deputies and detectives began canvassing the neighborhoods of Canopy Creek, Creek Park, Oakwood Road and Verdict Ridge and found 18 unlocked vehicles had been broken into and items were stolen. During the investigation, it was found that the incident involved five suspects, one adult and four juveniles who have been identified.
A combined investigation by Lincoln County and Catawba County Sheriff's Offices led to a residence in Charlotte, NC and resulted in the recovery of two stolen vehicles from Catawba County and numerous items stolen from vehicles in Lincoln County. Numerous felony charges are pending for the juveniles through the North Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice and for the adult through the North Carolina Courts.
Officers involved in the investigation are 1st Sgt. A. Alvarado, Sgt. J. Counts, deputies M. Hayes, T. Thompson, J. Miller and D. Hasenaur along with Detectives A. Mocilan and D. Hendrix.
