Lincoln County Sheriff's
Office Press Release

LINCOLNTON, N.C. – Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputies charged a Lincolnton man in connection with break-ins to storage units in eastern Lincoln County.

On November 14, 2021 around midnight two deputies were stationary at Iron Station Elementary School reviewing reports when a vehicle pulled into the parking lot with no lights on. When the driver saw the patrol cars the headlights came on and officers observed a male and female in the vehicle. They told officers they were searching for a missing dog that ran off.

The subjects left the parking lot and deputies thought it was strange because they had pulled into the parking lot looking for a dog with the lights out on the car. Deputies conducted an investigative traffic stop on Magnolia Grove Road. The two people gave permission to search the vehicle where officers found methamphetamine and a meth pipe in the passenger side door.

Officers also learned the driver may have broken into several storage units at Denver Mini Storage on North NC 16 Business. Other deputies went to that location and discovered an opening cut in the fence around the business and several storage units broken into and the doors left open. Officers also discovered bolt cutters and broken locks during a search of the premises. Deputies were trying to contact the storage unit renters to determine what was stolen. The vehicle was transported to the LCSO Impound Lot to be processed.

Steven Dale Elliott, 40, of Openview Drive, Lincolnton, NC was charged with first degree trespassing, four counts of injury to personal property, four felony counts of breaking and entering a building, possession of a controlled substance Schedule II and possession of drug paraphernalia. Elliott was taken before a Lincoln County magistrate and placed in the Harven A. Crouse Detention Center under a $57,000 secured bond.

Investigation into the incident is continuing.
