High Speed Chase Ends In Fatality

Wayne Howard
Staff Writer

A 31-year-old Charlotte man made a decision to flee police and it cost him his life early Monday morning (Aug. 16th). Kyle Alan Wagner was stopped by Newton Police on US321-business in that city shortly after 1 AM.

As the Officer prepared to exit his patrol car, Wagner sped off, traveling south on Highway 321 business at a high speed.

The officer pursued the vehicle, which continued through Maiden and into Lincolnton on North Aspen Street. Wagner, said to be traveling in excess of 89 mph, lost control and the car ran off the right side of the road and struck the guardrail on the bridge over the creek just north of City Park near Deaton Avenue.

Wagner was unresponsive when removed from the vehicle by officers. He died en route to Atrium Health Lincoln.

The vehicle caught fire, but that was quickly extinguished by the Lincolnton Fire Dept.

Newton and Maiden police were involved in the chase. Lincolnton Police and Lincoln County Sheriff's deputies were called to the scene after the accident.
