Lincoln County Sheriff's
Office Press Release

LINCOLNTON, N.C. - A GPS tracking device led to the arrest of a Lincoln County man and the vehicle he is accused of stealing.

Deputies were dispatched to a residence in the 4200 block of East Highway 150 on May 29, 2020 in connection with the theft of a vehicle. The victim told deputies she left the keys in her unlocked 2014 Nissan Altima and it disappeared from the driveway overnight.

Detective J. Talbot began an investigation into the theft and discovered the car had a GPS tracking system and could be located by the company that financed the vehicle. The tracking device “pinged” near an unoccupied dwelling on Tripple H Lane north of Lincolnton. Officers checked the area and located the stolen vehicle behind the residence covered with a tarp.

During the investigation Detective Talbot remembered a similar case involving an individual who lived in a nearby residence. He had charged the man with the theft of a mini-van that was discovered in a field on Tripple H Lane. Jeremiah Austin Helms, 22, of 173 Tripple H Lane, Lincolnton, NC was convicted in the case and is currently on probation and required to wear an ankle monitor.

Several items from the current vehicle theft were discovered in the family garage. Probation investigators provided Detective Talbot with GPS data that placed Helms at the victim’s address when the car was taken and where the vehicle was found. The suspect was located at his residence on June 1, 2020 and taken into custody without incident. He was charged with felony larceny of a motor vehicle and placed in the Harven A. Crouse Detention Center under a $12,000 secured bond.

The vehicle and most of the contents were returned to the owner.
