LC Schools 2020-2021 Kindergarten Screening Information

Lincoln County Schools
Press Release

LINCOLNTON, N.C. - On April 24, 2020, Governor Roy Cooper issued an Executive Order that all schools will remain closed through the remainder of this school year. Unfortunately, the scheduled Kindergarten screening dates for Lincoln County Schools were cancelled this spring because of these school closures due to COVID-19. As a result, Lincoln County Schools will schedule Kindergarten screenings to be held during the staggered entry dates that will occur within the first scheduled days of school for the 2020-2021 school year.

Within Lincoln County Schools, our Elementary schools have historically conducted a staggered entry approach to Kindergarten. Staggered entry provides students the ability to attend school in small numbers the first few days of the school year. This approach allows our newest learners/students a gradual entry into school and provides the teachers an opportunity to get to know students in a smaller setting.

Registered students will be contacted by schools in early July, 2020 with their child’s staggered entry date for the Fall. They will attend school that day, meet and work with all of the kindergarten teachers, learn about kindergarten, tour the school, meet new friends, play in centers, and be assessed using the same screening tool we would have used this past spring. This year our staggered entry dates will occur the first four days of the 2020-2021 school year. Following the four staggered entry days, kindergarten teachers will have a work day to analyze data, create balanced classrooms, and communicate class placement with parents. Students will not be assigned to a specific teacher's classroom until the four days of staggered entry are completed. Elementary schools in Lincoln County Schools will also host a Meet the Teacher event that afternoon that will allow the families to visit their child’s classroom prior to their official first day, which will occur the second full week of school.

The purpose of the kindergarten screening is to provide accurate and useful information about children’s skills, abilities, and competencies. This information is used to build balanced classrooms, help teachers know where to begin instruction, and to identify key areas for early intervention. Lincoln County Schools feels confident that by screening students during the staggered entry, the schools will be able to gather a wealth of information that will allow the teachers and administrators to appropriately place the children into classes, therefore ensuring student success for the entire school year.

Kindergarten is an exciting time for parents, teachers, and especially students. We look forward to meeting your child on their staggered entry date and serving them throughout the school year.
