Lincoln County Sheriff's
Office Press Release

Emergency Services personnel from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office and East Lincoln Fire Department saved a man who jumped from the Cowan’s Ford Dam bridge on Highway 73 Tuesday morning (May 26th).

Just before 11 AM, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office dive team and drone team were dispatched to a call saying a person had jumped off of the NC73 bridge at Cowan’s Ford Dam.

Emergency Services Personnel already on the scene requested the teams respond to assist in locating the individual. While enroute, officers were advised rescue personnel had located the subject in the water.

The Dive Team arrived on the scene at 11:30 AM and staged at Cowans Ford Overlook.  Upon arrival East Lincoln Fire Department water team members and Dive Team member Deputy Kevin Cornett were able to rescue the man and bring him back to shore.

The 63-year-old man was conscious.  He was turned over to Lincoln County EMS for additional treatment and was transported to the hospital.  Dive team operations terminated at approximately 11:40 AM.

Traffic in both directions--eastbound from NC16 and westbound from Mecklenburg County--was backed up over two miles while the man's car was being removed from the bridge.
