Man Who Shot Cop Arrested

Antonio Cortez Anthony is in the Gaston County Jail. He was released from the hospital, then arrested on charges of attempted first-degree murder, assault on a police officer with a firearm, possession of a stolen firearm and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Anthony's address was listed on Gaston County Jail records as Hickory. He previously lived in Dallas when he was arrested by Gastonia Police on a larceny charge in November.

Anthony is accused in the shooting of Kings Mtn. Police Cpl. Frank Lee Whittington, Jr. on Saturday evening Dec. 19th. Whittington had responded to a call about 8 PM that night about an unknown person on the back porch of a residence on Dixon Drive near Kings Mtn. Country Club.

Shots were exchanged and both Whittington and Anthony were injured. Whittington was released from the hospital on Wednesday of last week.

Anthony is scheduled for a first appearance in court Tuesday (Dec. 29th).

Two other police officers were killed while answering calls in Mt. Holly amd Concord in the two weeks before Christmas.
