Deputies Investigating Shooting Incident, One Person Injured

LINCOLNTON, N.C. – Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating a shooting incident that occurred on November 5, 2020 in western Lincoln County.

Deputies were dispatched to Natural Spring Lane, Vale, NC around 12:15 p.m. after the victim called Lincoln County 9-1-1 and reported he had been shot in the side. The injured man was located at the end of the driveway to 8316 Natural Spring Lane.

The injured man, Thomas Wayne Mathis, 35, of Lincolnton told officers he and Cody Randall Johnson, 36, of Natural Spring Lane got into a physical altercation and during the fight a female, Katie Alees Lattimore, 28, of Shelby shot him in the abdomen. Deputies stopped Lattimore as she was attempting to leave the scene. She has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and inflicting serious injury.

On November 7, 2020, Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputies and Longview Police arrested Lattimore at a location in Catawba County. She was taken before a Lincoln County magistrate and placed in the Harven A. Crouse Detention Center under a $50,000 secured bond.

Mathis was transported to Atrium Health Cleveland for treatment of the gunshot wound. Following his release from the hospital on November 6, 2020, Shelby Police served Mathis with an outstanding warrant for breaking and entering a motor vehicle. That incident occurred on November 4, 2020 on North Brook Number Three School Road.

Detectives secured a search warrant for Johnson’s home at 8316 Natural Spring Lane. Cody Johnson is a convicted felon and during the search officers located a second handgun and a quantity of methamphetamine. Johnson was charged with possession of a firearm by a felon and placed in jail under a $20,000 secured bond.

Investigation into the incident is continuing.
