Saturday (Nov. 23rd) was Jonathan Gidney's 26th birthday. It was early Sunday morning (about 3:30 AM) when he was killed in a traffic accident on NC Highway 16 in Catawba County.
According to the Highway Patrol, Gidney's 2004 Cadillac was traveling north on NC 16, had passed several northbound vehicles, and was left of center when it collided head-on with a southbound Freightliner FedEx Ground tractor-trailer. The Cadillac immediately became engulfed in flames.
Jonathan Lee Gidney died at the scene. The driver of the Freightliner was not injured. Gidney had been employed since June as a Detention Officer with the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office according to Sheriff Bill Beam: "He was well-liked and a credit to our office," Sheriff Beam said. "He will certainly be missed."
A funeral service will be held Saturday afternoon (Nov. 30th) at 2:00 at Providence Missionary Baptist Church with burial to follow in Hollybrook Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
Ebony & White Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
