Gaston College To Give Out More Than $1 Million
Federal emergency funds for students

Lincoln Herald Staff

Gaston College will disperse more than $1 million in federal emergency financial aid for students.

As college spokeswoman Stephanie Michael Pickett explained this week, the money will be provided under the CARES (or corona virus aid relief and economic security) Act Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund, recently given congressional approval. Some $14 billion dollars was recently allotted through the CARES Act, with $6.28 billion going to colleges and universities and community colleges across the country. Gaston College received $2,520,848, with half the funding ($1,260,424) designated to students and the remaining $1,260,424 going to the college for institutional operations and financial costs.

According to the United States Department of Education, the designated student aid funding is to help students cover expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to said virus’s governmentally-mandated restrictions, resulting in the closure of Gaston College and other such institutions statewide. Costs considered eligible include course materials, technology, housing, food, health care and child care. A total of 3,122 Gaston College students are eligible to receive CARES Act student grant funds, according to the school’s president, Dr. John Hauser.

“Our students have faced some unprecedented challenges due to the corona virus pandemic,” said Hauser. “Some are out of work, and their financial situations are growing more precarious every day. However, despite their circumstances, they have persisted to complete their educational goals. We are reaching out to our eligible students, particularly those with the greatest need, so they can receive payment as quickly as possible. We’ll continue to care for and support our students and use our CARES Act funding to bring them some relief.”

Regarding these payments, students are being notified by telephone, e-mail, text messages and social media. Checks will be mailed to approved students or direct-deposited into their bank accounts. To expedite payment, students not currently in direct-deposit enrollment are encouraged to enroll as soon as possible.

To be eligible, students must be in a degree, certificate or other approved program and be enrolled as a full or part-time student. Students in the high school career and college promise and dual-enrollment programs, work force training and high school non-degree programs are not eligible. Students must have been enrolled in courses at the college during this past spring or have filed withdrawals due to circumstances related to the virus. They must be American citizens and have good academic records.
