COVID-19 Update From Lincoln County Schools

Lincoln County Schools
Press Release

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work through COVID-19 and its impact on our schools.  We are receiving new guidance daily from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, the State Board of Education, the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, and the Lincoln County Health Department.  I am working closely with the Lincoln County Board of Education to make the best possible decisions for all students and staff during this pandemic.  This is an ever changing situation and we are working tirelessly to plan and prepare during this school closure.

PUBLIC WIRELESS ACCESS

The Technology Services Department has completed the exterior public wireless installation at all school sites.  A one-page map and information sheet that shows the network name and where to access the service on each campus is available on individual school websites.  This information has also been shared via Social Media by each school in order to assist the community with wireless access.

INSTRUCTIONAL SUPPORT

The Instructional Services Department met with all principals this week to review the current status of remote learning and instructional activities originally scheduled for the last 6 weeks of school.  The status of many of these activities are dependent upon the pending expiration of the Governor's executive orders.  These activities include:

  • Continuation of Remote Learning:  Currently, at-home learning activities have been planned through May 15, 2020.  These learning activities are available at specific school sites or online on the school webpage.  Any learning activities scheduled beyond May 15, 2020 will be communicated at a later date.
  • Fourth Quarter Grades:  No new or additional guidance has been provided for determining grades for student learning that occurred after March 13, 2020.  Grades prior to March 13, 2020 were included in Third Quarter grades.  A grading plan for the Fourth Quarter will be shared at a later date.
  • Class of 2020 Commencement:  No decisions have been made regarding changes to scheduled commencement activities for high schools.  High School Principals and Central Services Leadership will continue to review options and/or alternatives for Prom, Awards Programs, and Commencement.  There are many factors that are being carefully considered such as the Stay at Home Order, the duration of school closure, and public health concerns.
  • Governor’s School:  As of April 16, 2020, the North Carolina State Board of Education had not made any final decisions regarding participation in the Governor’s School Program.  Options are currently being reviewed and discussed by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction with partner institutions.
  • Pre-K Screening- Date Change:  Pre-kindergarten screening has been rescheduled for June 15-18, 2020 at the Central Services facility.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Lincoln County Schools received a large donation of food from Pursuit Church, 300 bags of food that will be distributed this week.  We also continue to receive monetary donations to assist in food distribution.  To date, monetary donations total $2370.00 which will be used to purchase additional food for families in need.  Christian Ministry of Lincoln County has provided 400 meals for distribution this week.  Lincoln County Schools is grateful for the continued contributions and generosity as we work together to feed our school community.

CLEANING OF SCHOOL FACILITIES

The custodians at all school and district sites continue cleaning and disinfecting our buildings. Currently we are disinfecting with a new cleaner, HALT, which is registered with the Environmental Protection Agency with claims to kill all emerging viral pathogens.  This industrial cleaning will continue to take place daily and for the duration of the school closure.

FREE MEALS TO-GO

As of April 21, 2020, the Lincoln County Schools Child Nutrition Department has served 165,868 meals by offering the Grab and Go Feeding Program.  Meals To-Go sites are open Monday through Friday and are including weekend meals on Fridays.

All feeding sites are drive-through only.  Parents may go to any school offering these free meals.  Parents are not required to go to the school their child attends to pick up meals.  We are encouraging the community to take advantage of the Free Meals To-Go program at the eight designated school locations.
