DALLAS - Gaston College is doing its part in the ongoing fight against the new global virus.

According to college spokeswoman Stephanie Michael Pickett, the school recently donated more than 9,000 medical supplies to CaroMont Regional Medical Center in Gastonia and Atrium Health-Lincolnton to help local care providers protect medical care workers.

Gaston College Dean of Health and Human Services Dr. Allison Abernathy reached out last week to local patient-care providers to see how the college could help them. Over this past weekend, she asked her faculty and team to pull together supplies to deliver to both hospitals.

“We work closely with local hospitals and other health care facilities in both Gaston and Lincoln counties,” said Abernathy. “Each year, our partners help us prepare Gaston College students to become the best qualified, working professionals in the health care field. They critically need our medical supply donations so they won’t put themselves and other individuals at risk by spreading the corona virus.”

College departments donated gowns, masks, surgical tie caps, plastic eye goggles, gloves, disposable laboratory coats and personal protection equipment.

Abernathy expressed her gratitude.

“We thank Gaston College,” she said, “and the nursing, nurse’s aide, veterinary medical technology, medical assisting/phlebotomy, cosmetology, emergency medical services and art departments for their donations to CaroMont Regional Medical Center and Atrium Health-Lincolnton.”
