The Balance

Marty Reep, Author
Speaker, Forward-Thinker

Every day, there is a balancing act you live out – a give and take. You wake up, get ready for your day, and head off into the blue-skied surroundings either bleary-eyed or fully awake. Somewhere between the start and the finish of your 24 hours, you probably notice what kind of day other people are having, in relation to your own.

With that, how much time do you spend focused on them? How much do you spend on yourself? There’s balance that must occur for each of us to have a healthy, happy existence, every 24 hours.

In talking with people, you may sense that everything is going great with them. If so, that’s awesome! Have a mini-celebration, of sorts. A high-five, a “Woo Hoo!”, or a gigantic smile will add to the happiness and solidify the moment.

On the other hand, they may tell you that they’re having an awful day. That requires another approach. Maybe they want to be left alone, or maybe they want a compassionate ear to listen to what’s going on in their lives. And, if the circumstances are appropriate, you could pray with them, right then and there. If not, mentally address it later, on your own. By making yourself available to the needs or concerns of others – just by being friendly – you establish a connection and open a doorway that you may need to use, later on. I don’t mean that to sound like a “give to get” scenario – it’s based the idea of common decency.

Or, you may be going about your business, and suddenly everything seems to fall apart around you! In that case, you’ll be looking for some help from others. You’ll also be in the throes of trying to figure out how to reverse the awfulness that’s happening. In doing so, you may need to use the positive energies from others, temporarily, or even ride on their coattails to see you through the day. There’s nothing wrong with that, once in a while – it’s all part of life.

Honestly, that’s the beauty of “The Balance”. Many people don’t even realize it’s happening every day, nor that they’re adding to or subtracting from their inward and outward accounts. But, some people do realize that it’s going on, and they’re the ones who frequently maximize it. They make it seem effortless and seamless – much like a duck that glides smoothly across the water in a pond. On the surface, the happy, little duck just calmly moves from one side of the pond to the other. But, underneath, its little feet are going at it in rapid-fire motion!

Your balance is the same way. Your “feet” may seem as if they’re running a million km/h. But in your heart and mind, you’re at peace – because you know you’re living exactly as you need to, during those 24 hours.

Temporary joys don’t last forever, but neither do the storms. Be there for somebody else when they need you, and they’ll be there for you.
