Chloe's Pocketful Of Happiness

Marty Reep, Author
Speaker, Forward-Thinker

“I wish I could go back in time, find them as kids, and give them a bunch of big hugs!” my daughter, Chloe, said a while back.
“Why?” I asked.
“To make them better people, today.”

Chloe worked in retail, and it had apparently been very challenging. When I asked her what the problem was, she said, “Some people are just so rude, Dad!”
“Okay. What do you want to do about it?”
“Find a time machine, and go back in it to when those people were kids.”
“Great idea! Now, aside from that, what else could you do?”
“Make ‘em laugh?”
“Yeah, that’s good, too. And you can make sure they don’t drag you down with them. Do your best to encourage them, and then move on.”
“I can do that.”

I used to think that Chloe had a pocketful of happiness that she carried around with her everywhere. Then, I realized she IS the happiness. Things can seem dark and dreary, but her attitude of “gonna do it, anyway” still shines through.

The happiness she lives in isn’t conjured up or manufactured. It just is. It’s an aura that surrounds her and pervades through almost all aspects of her life. Sure, she gets knocked down once in a while, but for the most part, she is upbeat and happy about things.

So, where do you stand on this spectrum? Are you perpetually happy, perpetually sad, or somewhere in the middle? Do you let life bowl you over, or are you out knocking down all of the pins, instead?

When life presents itself to you in the form of a challenge, shake its hand, overcome it, and keep moving. I guarantee that in almost every challenge you face, there are aspects of it that you can learn from. Why is it good to learn from them? Because, you’ll probably see some variation of those situations, again. And, the next time you do, you’ll be ready!

Chloe has always been a happy-spirited person. Even as a little girl, she would laugh at some of the extremely tough situations that she had to face. I still remember bringing her home from the hospital after a major surgery, wondering how she was going to handle the healing process and the numerous follow-up appointments we had to go to. She laughed through most of them – not exactly what I thought she would do.

Roll time forward – In between college full-time and working part-time, she would still sit down and relax. Inevitably, a few minutes later, giggles and laughter would start working their way across the room from where she was, to the rest of us nearby.

I’d ask, “Is your homework that funny?” To which I’d get a cockeyed head-tilt, a pseudo-grin, and a reply of, “No. I’m watching funny videos. See…these are hilarious.” I’d sit down beside her and watch a couple. She was right – they were funny!

And, once again, I was reminded that out of all the things online that she could be watching at that moment, she chose to watch something that made her laugh…something that fed the humor and lightheartedness of her soul. What a good thing that is!

Likewise, I hope that you will find something that makes you laugh! May you feed your spirit and soul the good things that will put a smile on your face and humor in your heart! And…may you become your own pocketful of happiness, as well.
