Today in History in 1533 Pope Clement VII excommunicated England's King Henry VIII; in 1914 Babe Ruth debuted as a pitcher for the Boston Red Sox; in 1952 Gen. Eisenhower was nominated as the Republican U.S. presidential candidate; and in 1985 the Astros' Nolan Ryan became the first to strike out 4,000 batters.
